RESPONSIBLE TRAVELER

Travel and tourism should be conceived and practiced as a means of personal and collective development. When approached with an open mind, they become an irreplaceable factor for self-education, mutual tolerance, and understanding of the legitimate differences and diversity among people and cultures. We all have a role to play in promoting responsible travel and tourism. Governments, businesses, and communities should certainly pursue this by all means, but you, too, as a visitor, can thoughtfully support this goal in many ways:

CULTURE

Be open to cultures and traditions different from your own: your experience will be enriched, you will earn the respect of the local population, and they will be more welcoming toward you. Be tolerant and respect diversity; observe the traditions and social and cultural practices of the place

LEGAL

Learn about the current laws to avoid committing any acts considered criminal in your destination. Do not engage in trafficking drugs, weapons, antiques, protected species, or products or substances that are dangerous or prohibited by national and international regulations.

HEALTH SAFETY

Research the current health conditions of your destination and the availability of consular and emergency services to ensure your health and personal safety will not be at risk. Make sure your specific needs are met before deciding to travel to a particular destination.

NATURE

Help conserve the natural environment. Protect wildlife and their habitats, and avoid purchasing products made from endangered plants or animals.

HUMAN RIGHTS

Respect human rights. Any form of exploitation violates the fundamental objectives of tourism. Child sexual exploitation is a punishable offense, both in the location where it occurs and in the offender’s country of residence.

INFORMATION

Gather as much information as possible about your destination, and take time to understand its customs, norms, and traditions. Avoid behaviors that may offend the local population.

ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Your trip can contribute to economic and social development. Purchase local crafts and products to support the local economy, and adhere to fair trade principles. When negotiating, keep in mind the importance of fair wages.

CULTURAL RESOURCES

Respect cultural resources. All tourist activities should be conducted with respect for artistic, archaeological, and cultural heritage.
